Fire Hydrant Replacement Project
There are over 700 fire hydrants (FH) throughout the District with a large majority identified as public hydrants; the remainder are privately maintained hydrants as they reside entirely outside of public right-of-ways and are within private parcels (commercial lots, HOA, etc.). The public FHs are maintained and operated cooperatively by District operations staff and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD). However, the physical upkeep, repair, and replacement of the FHs are the responsibility of the District.
Within the inventory of public hydrants, many are over 50 years old and do not meet current design requirements and/or no longer have replacement parts available from original manufacturers or third-party suppliers; these hydrants require full replacement. In some instances, decommissioned hydrants taken out of service can be salvaged for spare parts on hydrants still in operation. Currently, a minimum of 30 hydrants have been identified that are out of manufacturer date with no reliable supplier available for replacement parts. This fire hydranbt replacement project represents the second phase of replacement of the highest-risk hydrants no longer able to be maintained with new replacement parts. The first phase completed eight (8) full replacements from June-August 2025. The current includes ten (10) hydrant replacements, including a new 6-inch valve, 6-inch lateral, fire hydrant, related fittings and protective bollards. The locations for these replacements are shown on the attached drawing.
Project schedule is still to be finalized but Staff expects the contractor to begin construction in August 2027. Temporary traffic control will be in place during construction with lane closures and flagger-controlled stop/go traffic in place. All work will be completed prior to the October 15, 2026 TRPA grading deadline.
