Ski Beach Lightning Safety Procedures
Lightning Safety Procedures at the Ski Beach Boat Ramp
The safety of our guests and staff is our top priority. Guests are strongly encouraged to leave the water and seek appropriate shelter whenever lightning is detected in the area. Weather conditions are continuously monitored using the WeatherBug lightning detection system.
When lightning is detected within 10 miles of the boat ramp:
- New boat launches will be temporarily suspended until 30 minutes have passes without lightning being detected within 10 miles.
- Boaters already on the water may return to the ramp and retrieve their vessels.
When lightning is detected within 6 miles of the boat ramp:
- All outdoor operations, including watercraft sealing services, will be suspended and will not resume until 30 minutes have passed without lightning being detected within 6 miles.
- Staff will seek shelter immediately and will not be available to assist with launching, retrieval, inspections, or sealing activities.
Retrieving your boat during a lightning event:
Boaters may retrieve their vessels from the water while staff are sheltering with the following conditions in mind:
- Watercraft sealing services will resume only after 30 minutes have passed without lightning being detected within 6 miles.
- Retrieved vessels must park in the Aspen Grove parking lot to await sealing once operations resume. Boats that leave the ramp/Aspen Grove area without being resealed will be required to complete a new inspection before their next launch.
- There is a possibility that lightning may remain within 6 miles of the boat ramp through normal operating hours. In this situation, sealing operations will not resume for the remainder of the day. Any vessel not resealed before the ramp closes must be reinspected at an authorized inspection station prior to its next launch.
Before You Launch
Weather conditions can change rapidly. During periods when storms are forecasted, boaters should be aware that ramp operations may be suspended on short notice due to lightning activity. We encourage all boaters to monitor weather conditions and plan accordingly.
These procedures are in place to protect the safety of all guests and staff and will be enforced whenever lightning poses a risk in the area.
