Hydrate Like a Local: Outsmarting the Tahoe Sun
As our summers in Tahoe get warmer each year, it’s important to stay hydrated and watch for signs of heat-related illness. Our community sits at over 6300 ft above sea level, where the air is thinner and drier. This means we lose moisture much faster, even if we don’t feel sweaty. Our bodies might not signal thirst as quickly as they would at lower elevations.
Why does this matter?
Dehydration sneaks up on you, leading to headaches, dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth, and dark urine. If left unchecked, it can progress to heat exhaustion or even life-threatening heat stroke. Older adults and outdoor enthusiasts are at higher risk.
How can you protect yourself?
- Drink water regularly throughout the day, not just when you’re thirsty.
- Carry a water bottle and take frequent breaks in the shade.
- Wear light, breathable clothing and limit alcohol/caffeine intake when it’s hot.
- Watch for warning signs like confusion, rapid pulse, or fainting.
- Drink electrolytes! There are many options at our local markets. Coconut water is also a great natural option for light hydration.
Let’s keep our spirits high and our water bottles full. Cheers to a safe, happy, and hydrated summer in our beautiful mountain town!
