Recreation Center Heating Ventiliation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Replacement Project

HVAC Replacement Project Overview:

2026 Project update:

Visitors should anticipate temporary impacts to operations during construction. These may include off-site programming, limited access to certain areas, or short-term closures related to mechanical tie-ins and equipment installation. As construction progresses, members are encouraged to stay informed and plan visits accordingly.

The project has been organized into two phases.

Phase 1:  5/4 – 6/25:

  • Limited access to the lower level of the area between the Gymnasium and the Fitness Floor. All areas will still be accessible.
  • We appreciate your patience during this important project. While construction on the HVAC system is underway, you may notice changes in airflow, occasional construction noise, and other related building impacts. Thank you for your understanding as we work to improve the facility for all to enjoy for years to come.

Phase 2: 6/25 – 8/29:

  • The Recreation Center Pool will be closed during this phase. During the closure, the project team will take the opportunity to replace the pool deck and complete several additional improvements to enhance the facility.

History of the Project:

Since original construction in 1992, repairs to the Recreation Center’s Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system have been ongoing and extensive.  In November of 2022, an inspection and evaluation of the existing Recreation Center HVAC system was completed including inspection of six air handling units (AHUs), three air conditioning condensing units (CUs), five return fans, and three exhaust fans.   Recommendations included replacement of the AHUs based on age, wear, and parts availability for repairs and also replacement of the air conditioning CUs based on age, wear, and industry phased-out refrigerant.

To date, the project has included preparation of construction documents.  The construction contract for the project was successfully bid in August/September 2025 and the construction contract was Board-approved in November 2025. Click here for the Board Meeting Memo.
